In what has become a tradition for our Northampton Area League, a group of members helped new citizens register to vote.
Organizing our materials on a table under the shade of gigantic trees on the Court House lawn, six League members prepared to
register new citizens. Despite the heat, we were all thrilled to be part of this tradition.
50 people became new Citizens on the 4th of July. They came from 28 different countries – some countries we had never heard of and then one from
Canada and one from Russia. They live in 10 different towns in Hampshire/Franklin/Hampden Counties. None in Northampton,
but some close by: Amherst, Hadley, Easthampton and Sunderland.
Yvonne Freccero delighted the children and their parents by handing out large American flags. Margie Riddle handed out
instructions for Registering to Vote On Line. These forms were created by our own Nancy Polan. Margie ran out of these forms!
After the ceremony, 16 new citizens registered to vote. Some chose to bring their forms home – by noon, it was very hot.
Another small statistic: 5 of our 6 League members helping are also naturalized citizens. Their membership is a compliment to the League of
